Google search by image

New(ish) Google feature. It's like TinEye reverse image search, but a lot better.

Go to http://images.google.com - search for the URL of your image, and click "search by image".

Prepare to be depressed .
I've only tried a few, and they're basically plastered all over the web and are being used for absolutely everything. Advertising, blogs, other people's flickr accounts, etc.
Some even have other people's watermarks and copyright notices on them!

Luckily I only upload small-ish pics, so at least they're not gonna end up on stock photography websites without my knowledge!

Yeah its better that Tineye, and did mine a while ago. It brought up a handful, but one was on a church website in the US. Cheeky beggars!

If it searches by URL presumably it only finds links and not re-hosting?

Thanks for this, just found a few of mine floating around, some of a Clio on a Turkish Renault forum and one of a Murci on a Chinese site with someone else's watermark on it ... cheeky buggers!

Surely this is just telling you what your website stats are already telling you if they're being pulled from elsewhere - except you need to each image individually rather than getting a large list of URL's that are requesting files from your hosting ?



Handy of course to confirm if people are hosting themselves though - although most people can't be bothered with that and just link directly - which makes it easier to track down

Open up Google, then top left “images”, then click the camera icon in the search box. Copy and past your images URL and search.

You have to do individual searches for each image, but it has brought up some of my images that have been taken, renamed and saved on others web sites!

The really important thing though is that my site is two million, five hundred and twenty six thousand, six hundred and ninety places HIGHER in traffic rankings than the British Prime Minister's site. (mainly due to his rubbish photos I guess)

Anyone know how to use this search function with flickr images?

I've tried copying the URL and pasting it in to the google search but everytime I just get a reply saying, "The URL doesn't refer to an image, or the image is not publicly accessible".

If you grab the HTML code for the image, in the middle there is an address starting "http://" and ending ".jpg". Cut it out and use that.

There is a seperate "grab link" which gives the UrL but google search doesn't seem to recognise it.

The grab link is a link to your Flickr page, not the jpg image. Right click>properties will show the URL

Took a while to realise that the first image doesn't give you the properties option (just all rights reserved blah blah blah) I've realised that I need to find the original size image which then gives me the properties tab.

You can use any size image too. I found it easier to click the stats page, that lists the image and most viewed. Then right click the thumbnail and whiz through them.
