Getting Started With Filters

I've never really understood filters - and I feel I may be missign out.

I have reasonably competent gear (couple of DSLRs, bagfull of lenses) and I like to think I have a modest knowledge both of exposure and post processing, but I've never really dabbled with filters.

I think I get it with graduated colour filters, but I'm a bit baffled by polariser, neutral density and close up filters - if anyone could be kind enough to post a quick sumary (ar a link) of what I should be able to achieve with each of these types of filters, I'd be very grateful.

I use grad NDs a lot to stop bright skies from bleaching out.

I use grads, nds and cpls

I bought a job lot of hitech filters they seem to do a decent job without breaking the bank.

I use a combination of CPL and ND grad on a large percentage of my landscapes to the point that instead of the standard lens cap I now use the Lee lens caps which can fit over the adaptor ring.
