The moon tonight - strange crater...

Just snapped this on a Panasonic FZ28, so nothing fancy, but what is that crater lower centre with the lines going out from it? Is that always there?

Yes, its always there, it is the crater Tycho. It is a relatively young crater hence the apparent brigtness.

Just out of interest what settings did you use to take that.
I have an FZ18 and I always get massive glare from the moon when I try and take a picture.

It's always been there - since whatever hit it, did!

I love the moon , and recently went to Turkey where light pollution and st in the air was minimal, as can be seen here.

Exposure - 0.005 sec (1/200)
Aperture - f/11.0
Focal Length - 560 mm (100-400mm lens with x1.4, manual focus, no IS as camera was on a tripod)

Used manual settings, so ISO 200 1/80 @ f7.1.

Massive glare will be your camera trying to expose for the surrounding blackness - the moon itself is very bright so expose for that
