MiniDV to PC or DVD conversion

I've got a bunch of MiniDV tapes (about 20 I would guess) that I want to convert to DVD or rip to my PC. I am however missing a vital ingredient... a MiniDV camcorder (or VCR).

Do I:
1. Buy a secondhand camcorder from eBay or elsewhere (perhaps £50 or less)
2. Pay for a commercial service to transfer them all (looks like £3.95/tape upwards)
3. Something else?!

Suggestions on a postcard please...

There are a few people on ebay that will do the transfer and some editing for under £5/tape.
Is 20 hours of your time worth the £50 extra than the time?

(Also there is a small risk of postal loss etc)
