Ok,

Well the good Mrs Tvrforver has given for my birthday today a LowePro Orion backpack and it's got me thinking...

Is this backpack ok - anybody got any views / comments / alternatives etc? (she's happy with me to swap it) At first glance it looks a little small and I'm a tad worried about the camera being at the bottom of the bag. Also appears nowhere to carry a tripod.

I've also got stacks of birthday cash burning a hole in my pocket so does anybody have any recommendations for a good tripod? I've already got a mono-pod, and this will need to be easily carryable with the backpack etc.

My camera gear - Canon EOS 10D, 28-75 IS USM, 75-300 USM, 3 x battery, XS Drive, 4 x CF cards, Canon IXUS digital, monopod etc.

Welcome anybody's comments...

Looking at p174 of my Jessops catalogue the 'Lowepro Computrekker AW' looks good. You can store the camera with telephoto lens attached and everything is accessible from the top - no layers. The catalogue also says 'holds up to 4 lenses... tripod carrier.'

£133 but it'll probably last you for decades.

I have just got the orion treker.

The bottom is padded but I have put an extra layer of bubble wrap in to be sure.
Its also made of the same material as my expensive Karrimoor backpack that I used on a year long world trek and it came back dusty but completly undamaged.

I like the shoulder straps on the Orion too. Its a comfy bag. Any bigger and it would end up wieghing more (coz Id put more in it!).

Shame it doesne thave a tripod strap but there are enough attachments to add your own one some how, just havent figured it out yet.

Have a look at the Lowepro Mini Trekker Classic, or Mini Trekker AW (£55/£85 respectively).

I've got one, and it fits all my gear except my big 300mm telephoto lens, and also has a tripod carrier on the back.

It's been all over the place with me, and has stood up very well to carrying a fair amount of gear.

Nothing wrong with LowePro but for a stylish and well made alternative you could try Crumpler bags made in Oz. Their zany web site is here:

www.crumpler.com.au

Or buy online here:

www.crumpleronline.co.uk

A mate has the biggest rucksack and it's impressive.

For a traditional look and feel you could try Billingham. They make a rucksack and, like all their products, it's beautifully made, but a bit on the small side.

Re. Tripod, you said you had stacks of cash so take a look at the Manfrotto or Gitzo carbon fibre range; won't add too much weight to you rucksack.

I love my Mini trekker aw

Holds more than i ever need to take with me tbh, but very comfy.

a tripod is something i'm looking for as my trusty velbon gets a little wobbly in breezy conditions when used with a 300mm lens.
a tripod with a invertable centre section would be great for those little BUG shots

My Lowe Pro Mini Trekker AW - The front has a fold down flap and stretchy fasteners to secure a tripod.
