Recommend me a camera please!

Hi all,

I don't have a digital camera at the moment, and having recently moved countries I thought it would be good to get one so I can share pictures, take decent photos, etc.

Getting frustrated with the lack of zoom and crap night quality from my iPhone 4.

I don't know whether I should go DSLR or Compact, I think Compact would be best as I'm not a professional and I'm not sure how far I want to take it...

Could someone recommend something for me, I was looking at cameras like the PowerShot SX230...

Canon S95 seems to be voted best compact camera by most reviews. (Or the equiv Pansonic - LX5)

I have mine with me all the time - constantly surprises me how good it is.

Cannon DSLR 550D.

Bought one for the missis as she likes/teachers photography, and needed a robust multifunction camera for work. She loves it and even i can use the bloody thing! (shes a secondary school art teacher btw)
I did a bit of research and came up with this choice as being a very very solid allrounder.

So would a compact be better for my uses? (Taking out on travels, to gigs, nights out, etc)...

I was thinking a DSLR would probably be too bulky...

It really depends if you carry a bag that could accomodate it.

The joy of these cannons is with a 50mm lense they are quite small now, and you can add/upgrade them when you like.

I wont buy a compact now, the plethora of phones available pretty much cover 50% of my snaps. When I think I might want to take pictures, DSLR all day long.

Do you know anyone you can borrow one from?

I'd agree! Would never risk my DSLR on a night out. Added to that, a lot of bigger gigs / festivals specify that you can't take in professional camera equipment, which they define as anything with interchangeable lenses - there was a thread on here about it a couple of weeks back.

Sounds like a compact all the way for you! Worth noting that you might be able to pick up something reasonably decent for about 50 quid from an eBay outlet store. Much less upsetting when you drop it or someone spills beer on it, and saves cash in case you were tempted to get a DSLR as well in the future.

Buy whatever model of Canon compact you can get for ~£100. Don't even think about SLRs unless you're a keen photographer, because you'll just leave it in auto all the time anyway.
