...so dont hold your breath!
I took me ages to find the right Griff but there was a selection. Now Im after a Digital SLR which should be and easy choice, or should it?
This started because Im paying about £50 in getting films developed everytime I go in to Jessops, and where I queue is right next to the DSLR display!
I thought the decision would be easy since I currently own an EOS300, so the simple thing to do would be to buy an EOS300D.
BUT....
What of the 10D? How does it compare when taking the cost into account?
I know nothing of what the 10D offers so please enlighten me and give comparisons to the 10D
Also, what are the chances of Canon releasing a new DSLR soon?
Thanks.

Oh no - I know how long you take to buy anything!
By all accounts the 10D is an excellent camera; the 300D is less expensive and accordingly less featured. You pays your money... etc.
For a blow-by-blow comparison go to www.dpreview.com, then click on Buying guide/Side by side and you can choose which cameras to compare. More info than you shake a stick at.
As you're already down the Canon road and presumably have sufficient lenses, it seems sensible to stay with Canon.
(Which is a pity 'cos the Nikon D70 is 10D performance for 300D money

The only DSLR which I understand Canon are rumoured to be releasing later this year is a 1Ds Mk II, which will probably go for around £5-6k!
Full details of the differences between the 300D and 10D are here:
www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos300d/
While you're looking, how about looking for a cheaper film developer? You should be able to get somewhere decent for less money than Jessops charge.

I have tried cheaper developers but the quality I get back is rubbish.
I should shop around really but convenience means Jessops is the only decent one for me.
The best I have ever found was a Fuji one who was willing to negotiate for bulk deals and return custom.
Only trouble is that its in Sydney and a tad too far to go on my 30 min lunch break!

Do you shoot print or slide film? I use www.fujilab.co.uk which works out to £7 per film for Velvia including developing.
i have a 300d and thought of getting a 10d.. but to be honest theres not a huge difference between them... apart from build, and as i mentioned I dropped the 300d and it survived, some of the functions are easier to use... but I think 10ds are also hard to get... smells of an upgrade if you ask me. I think there will be a model change, following the new digic II processor in the 1dII. I think the 10d and 1DS will be changed, the 300d will make a good back up camera to a higher model
www.parkcameras.co.uk do used gear - no DSLRs on there at the moment, but it might be worth giving them a call, as they are offering a trade in offer for the new 1D Mk II so may be getting a few 10D or 300Ds in.
Also, ebay may be worth a shot, plus there are a few used equipment dealers who advertise in the back of Amateur Photographer.

Cant find starfoto on the net. Any clues?
Sorry, brainfade. I used to use them, now use Bonusprint.
I'm not sure about the idea of getting one DSLR first to see how you get on, then having to buy another more expensive one later. Cut your losses and go straight for the good one!
Going straight for the good one was the original concept. Trouble is I was having trouble budgetting for an EOS300D, then I read the specs of the 10D.
Im my own shopping nightmare. I should never read the specs.
Remember all those Griff questions? I could have bought one so much sooner if I hadnt found out so much about the differnt specs!

Dusty me lad. I'm in the same boat as you wanting a DSLR - if you find a good second hand shop let me know.
At the moment I am seriously considering a Nikon D70...I'd have preferred to stick with Canon as I'm used to the user interface (I have an old Powershot) but on the spec the Nikon comes out on top...
But can I *really* afford the £1K++ for one out of the camera budget...

I guess the question is will the extra features on the 10D be worth the extra money to you? If not, then you might as well save the £300 or so price difference, and put it towards another lens, or a couple of big memory cards.
If the chunky build quality and extra features are worth as much to you as a new lens, then the decision is easy!

if you can find it... 10d is a better camera.. by the way try www.photobox.co.uk for printing... very approachable, can phone and talk to them about saturation etc...

Always a good thing. That's what concerned me about the 300D. Pictures make it out to be a bit plasticky flimsy in comparison to the EOS10D or Nikon D70. Is that fair?
That's what they say. My choice was easy as I already had Nikon kit and the D70 was such a stormer for the price (effectively a 10D for 300D money) there was really no alternative.
But - I wonder if the arrival of the D70 will force the price of the 10D down? Might be worth holding on a bit to see what happens.
