Where to buy used equipment?

Calling on the PH experts here !

My wife loves taking photos, Mainly of our dogs and 2 sons playing sports.

She currently has a Sony compact which she has had for about 4 yrs and as her enjoyment of photography has grown she is finding it limiting ie shutter speeds and settings. Not being an expert I am open to suggestions but I believe a DSLR will move her on a level. Now I would rather buy a used decent example rather than a poorer new one if you get what I mean.

So where to source, ebay? or are there much better places?

Also any recommendations or should I stick to Canon / Nikon ? Budget up to £300

If you look on AVForums they have a classified section specifically for camera equipment which is very active http://www.avforums.com/forums/digital-camera-camc... I purchased my camera from someone on there and ive sold stuff too. like all classified adverts there is an element of trust involved in the sale but ive never had any problems. They have a feedback and trust feature which reduces a lot of the risk.
