What digital SLR?

I've been thinking about purchasing a digital SLR for the other half as we take lots of photos and with having a second mouth to feed on the way will be taking lots more, our point and shoot is ok and takes a decent enough picture but we would like to get some really good pics on the go. Is a budget of say £400 enough for a decent one or should I be budgeting for more than this? Any reccomendations greatly appreciated!

Once you have received your stuff, could you please post back on this forum on your reviews about the company and its service? I am planning to buy mine soonish as well from the same place. It would be good if it gets cleared that everything is legitimate for that company.

Thought I'd bump this thread rather than start a new one.
Similar position to the OP - my OH loves photography and I thought I'd pick her up her first 'proper' camera for Christmas. Unfortunately I'm a bit at sea with the options... Second hand/refurbished really isn't a problem as she's not the type to get offended that her present isn't new, not that there seems to be a huge amount of difference in price with the newish cameras.
My biggest question I suppose is if I'm best going for something like the 3100 recommended in this thread or the Canon equivalent (500D?) or something a bit cheaper. A quick browse suggests a 350d is ~150 quid cheaper which I could use to buy an additional nice lens or something.
An additional question would be if there are any photography courses people would recommend?

Well mine was due today and hasn't arrived, so I've e-mailed them to find out what the delay is, or whether I need to get my credit card involved. I'll update as appropriate.
Hairy, are you still Brum based as UCE runs one of the best arts depts in the country. Might be worth giving them a call and seeing if any of their students fancies doing a days teaching for some beer money. I briefly lectured on the graphics course there years ago and some of their students were amazing photographers - easily a match for many of the big names.
