About to buy a Tokina ATX 11-16 2.8 DX... Anyone know anything about this lens?

Hi all,

Slowly getting there with my lens collection, but the one thing missing was a wide angle. The widest I can go at the moment is 18mm on my Nikon 18-200 VR and seen as how I have a fetish for cityscape, architecture at night, and landscape, I found myself hitting the 18mm stop quite often and wished I had more!

So I've been looking for wide angle lenses to suit my D90 and a lens that keeps getting mentioned is the Tokina AT-X 11-16mm DX at about £500. To say it is a popular DX lens seems to be an understatement.

I'm not familiar with Tokina lenses at at all as all my other glass is Nikon.

Has anyone any experience with this lens or any other suggestions of similar lenses before I spunk £500 this afternoon?

I had the Nikon 12-24. Also a very nice lens. But the Tokina is faster and I don't think you'd see a difference in the image quality. And the Tokina is cheaper.

A no brainer decision probably.

I have one for my d300. Utterly superb. Very sharp and built like a tank. Can't recommend it highly enough. The only downside i can think of is te fairly short range. I'll stick some example shots up if you like.

I only ever use it underwater, but I keep having to send it back cos it doesn't like it

You need to fill the inside of the lens with water too, so the elements are in optical equilibrium with the refractive index of the sea...

I have been researching this lens all week, wanting a wide angle too and everything I've read about it seems good. I really want one but can't really justify the cost at the moment.

Cheapest I found it online in the UK was around the £450 mark.

I be the 15-50 2.8 Tokina and I cannot recommend it enough. Buy it!!

I just bought it online last night for £469 from an eBay seller who says he actually has them in stock in London and posts them out with Royal Mail recorded, his feedback is 100% and the feedback comments confirm that he selles a LOT of lenses and holds the advertised stock in the uk and posts quickly, so fingers crossed.

The problem is a lot of sellers who claim to have uk stock just order it themselves
from Hong Kong when you pay them resulting in a 2 week wait and possible customs charges!

I found it for £450 but it was from Simply Electrinics and I have read endless horror stories on the web about them not delivering the goods once payment was made!

The cheapest I found it in a 'normal' shop/website for was about £540.

Anyway, it's bought now and I just can't wait for it to arrive!!

How do you find chromatic aberrations with it ? Purple Fringing ?

I've not noticed any issues but I'm no expert. Just like the images it produces.

This isn't a great example as the lens is sharpest at around F5.6 and I had to stop down to F11 to extend the shutter time. It's wide enough that at it's sharpest, around F5.6, everything will be in focus from a couple of feet or so to infinity so no need to go narrower on the aperture usually.

Thanks fpc - interesting review. The only weakness it seems to have is the fringing that is pissing me off with my 10-22 which is a bummer but maybe it's a case of 'they all do that'

Otherwise it seems excellent
