My criteria would be: 3Mp+, good brand, 3x optical zoom. As well as the Canon there's a Fuji and the Olympus Mju300 (results from which you can see at www.blokewithacamera.co.uk).
Don't use just megapixels as your benchmark - the gubbins inside the camera is important too. I know I keep mentioning the Jessops catlogue but it's a very handy reference to start whittling down the list.

Then look on www.kelkoo.co.uk to see what you can really buy it for.
I found that my local Jessops would try and price match with these prices. I tried with one or 2 cameras and if not able to price match they can within £25. I would consider that well worth it, to have the backup 'on your doorstep'.

Just had a Minolta Dimage Z1 from www.7dayshop.com
3.2MP, 10x Optical & 6x Digital Zoom & 16mb SD card for £189 inc vat & del.
(although I now notice they've dropped it to £169
