I had a similar Fuji (s5600 I think) for a few years before I graduated to a DSLR.

Felt massive at the time compared to a P+S, I dug it out of a drawer the other day, comically small in comparison to the D90!

Served me well though, was a good camera.

Is this a good step from a cheap compact (which I have now) but can't quite stretch to an SLR?

I would like to get into photography more and this looks like a good middle ground for me.

I have just bought one of these and it is superb, really good step up from a compact. This camera is £360ish at Tesco, the refurb (which looked absolutely brand new when I got it)was £220 at the time (and is only £198 in the sale)
And if this code (P258BTCC467) still works it gets you an extra 17.5% off
( it worked for me just before christmas)

Similar here, I used a s6500 for quite a while and it seemed massive and clunky. Now I have a 7d the fuji is like a miniture camera!
Couldn't fault the Fuji really, but getting a used SLR will open up more options as you progress and want to try more things.
