Camcorder advice for a newby...

Morning all - I'm after some advice on a potential camcorder purchase...
Mrs GB and I are expecting the arrival of Baby GB in May, and Mrs GB likes the idea (and I'm with her on this one) of a camcorder to capture the key events of the coming years in Baby GB's life.
Trouble is we've never owned one before, so what should I be looking for, and does anyone have any tips?
Key criteria - I'd like HD (which they all seem to be), and I'd prefer a "barrel style" rather than the "pistol grip" style - they just seem to fit my hands better and I can't help but think the optics must be a bit better. Budget is sub £200.
Any suggestions?
