Mein Lens ist kaput!

Right, I've got a Nikon D40x and the 18-55mm lens ( 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G
ED II AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor) is broken.
I was using it the other day when after trying to zoom out from 55mm it would not rotate. Tried to manually focus it and it would also not rotate. Took it home and took the only 3 screws i could see out and it looks a mine field in there.
So what can i do? Is they repair shops i can take it to? Nikon or someone else? Guess its a online based thing or can i take it to a local Jessops etc?
Any recommendations welcome please

First question - warranty?
Second - where purchased?
Third - anything particular happened that would mean a claim on your (household/holiday/whatever) insurance?
Next point, I don't think that's a particularly expensive lens, so the bad news is it may not be economical to repair if you have to pay for it. If it were me, i might be tempted to whip it off to Nikon, Richmond and see what the damage might be and then use it as a good excuse to go out and buy some new glass!

You could also consider third party lenses that have a "SWM" (Silent Wave Motor - a built in focus motor operated electronically from camera body)

Nice little Sigma or Tamron? Then it will be perfectly serviceable when you move on to the next camera body (assuming you like Nikon and will be getting another)

I can thoroughly reccomend a Nikkor 18-70 as a replacement if you're looking at changing the camera, the lens needs to be cheap and you need one now.
I paid about £80 for mine from ebay and it's by far and away a better lens than the 18-55.
However, I've since bought a 35mm 1.8 and I've not used my 18-70 in a month...

Thanks for the replies chaps. I'd deffinately go used without any problems as I will be changing camera within the year.

Thanks, this on a D40x your using? As you might of guessed by now, I'm useless when it comes to the technical side of photography, it all goes over my head. Can you explain why the 35mm is better? Is that just fixed at a 35mm lenth then? So you cant zoom in or out? Yes; no; no such thing as a fixed zoom; a lens with a fixed focal length is called a Prime Primes tend to be faster and can be cheaper - but no zoom...

I had that lens on a D40, not the D40x and it was great - the D40 broke (sensor failure) and I got a D3100 - the 18-55 that came with it was only used once to make sure it worked before being sold. The 18-70 went on and is a nicer, faster lens that handled light far better than the 18-55.james_tigerwoods said:

Indeedymundo. A prime lens has one focal length, eg 35mm, 50mm, whilst a zoom lens is designated by its range of focal lengths, eg 18-55mm, 70-200mm etc. The longer the focal length the more magnification you get and the smaller field of view. So on your camera 10mm is an ultra wide angle, 18mm is wide angle, 35mm is 'standard', 100+ is telephoto. 100mm would be a telephoto prime, 100-200mm would be a telephoto zoom. Simples
