Tripods

Have been using a Slik 88 for years and found it to be ok. However with the weight of a 70-200 2.8 and D700 its struggling, (maybe due to its age rather then construction!).

So.....what to get next? Needs to be lightweight but strong so I'm guessing that means the carbon route? However Im open to suggestions. Budgeting somewhere between 150-200 of our English pounds.

It depends on how light you need.

I've got a Manfrotto 055XProB which is very sturdy and comes in well under budget, it weighs 2.4Kg which in day to day doesn't seem heavy, I'll carry it, or strap it to my rucksack and not feel it (mind you my camera bag weighs over 30lbs loaded).

I bought a Giottos carbon tripod (can't remember the exact model now) a couple of years ago and it's been faultless, only spent £200ish including the head.

Should of added that Ill get a new head as well... But Ill take a look at Manfrotto. I know what you mean about bag weights...;)

A Manfrotto with a decent ball head is probably the best bet at this price range

Ditto and have been really happy with it (I put a Manfrotto head on mine as I wasn't keen on the Giottos version).

I think you have answered for yourself that the main support might be something like a Gio-frotto and maybe invest in carbon for the weight. Personally I have an ancient, but tank-like 055C which is a huge step up from some so-called tripods at the "less expensive" end of the market (or free with a magazine!)

What's more interesting is the choice of head which goes with it. I used an "action" head for a while (a 222, IIRC). Then I moved on to a whole new "ball" [sic] game with a ballhead, a Swiss-Arca style fitting, dedicated L-bracket and Swiss-Arca replacement foot on the 70-200mm. Now when I use a tripod (which I hate doing, btw) at least it's a pleasure! They are from the likes of dedicated manufacurers like Kirk and Markins. Mind, even selecting all these bits secondhand I've probably blown your intended budget. But I can't stress enough what it's worth to find the bits that work for you and your style of working!

Stick a junior geared head on it and you'll never go back.
