Sexy Car/Garage Video
Discussion
Hello everyone:
Check out this cool video I made of my Porsche 911 GT3 (it has a kindof sexy flavor to it as it really emphasizes the cars sweeping lines):

I've decided to dive into the world of automotive video and I'm open to suggestions/feedback.

My honest feedback is that I lost interest as soon as the downward pan revealed that the car wasn't central in the frame to the extent that you'd clipped the edge of the car off to the left of the image (whilst there was plenty of space to the right of the frame). Harsh maybe, but helpful I hope - details like that count.

Good eye. Since I did the recording and editing a few days apart, I didn't notice that the car was off center until the editing session when it was too late to go back and do a re-take. I figured since I wasn't intent on reproducing a Star Wars episode that the centering of the car could be excusable. Your right, it's all in the details. Thank you for your honesty.mattdaniels said:
The exposure changes on the panning shots are really bugging. Not sure if its intentional or not. I'm assuming not, and you've left the camera on auto exposure, which is causing it a problem as you pan from the white ceiling / walls on to the black car.
I presume that you are refering to the paning at 0.41 to 0.55 in the video. This effect was intentional and consisted of speed up then slow down then added a shimmering effect. It looked ok during pre-production. Then didn't turn out post-production. Thanks for the feedback.smoores said:
Pretty solid effort, personally I think I would include a tiny bit of background noise thoughout like doors shutting or spray of cleaning fluid etc and obv finished off with a nice start-up before driving off. My 2 cents..
Thanks for the kind feedback. My orginal version had background noice (tool box door closing, tire pressure gauge, garage door opening, and finally engine starting and reving. At the last minute I decided to mute it all. Now I'm thinking I shouldn't have. The next video will be much better. I am planning a shoot with a GoPro camera and two other Porsche's.

Decent effort. I'd edit out the accelerating and decelerating portions of your pans to keep things flowing better. And maybe look into a better fluid head for your tripod and as others have said lock the exposure too. Great car though!
Great feedback. Do you have any suggestions for a better fluid head or method to get better control of the motion. Also, I used a Canon 7D DSLR. Not sure that I can lock / even control the exposure. Any suggestions here?Vader996GT3 said:

Shoot in manual, for generally the best results you want to be shooting at 1/50th for 24/25p and 1/125th for 60p then set the aperture accordingly to get a decent exposure (may have to bump up iso). If everything is too bright, look into getting a variable ND filter so that you can then choose the aperture that you want. That may seem a bit technical and a bit of a pain but that's how to get the closest to a "cinematic" look.
