Do I need a filter??

New to all this, but set up is 70-300mm IS USM do I need a filter? Not interested in effects but if its a case of protection then i'll get one.

Kinda religious debate, some people love them some people dont use them.

I dont. Use a lens hood and look after it, the lens front element is quite strong usually.

I use a cheapo UV Filter for protection on the same lens.

I don't bother with UV filters or lens caps. Lenses store face down with rear caps.

If you regularly use the lens where there may be reasonably high risk of it getting dirty or wet (rally/moto-x/sailing, etc) then a protection filter may be worthwhile as it can be abused and replaced fairly cheaply. The same tiwh very dusty envrinments where you might be wiping dust from the lens frequently. (But then decent filters are not cheap to replace ....)

Otherwise - no real need for a 'modern' lens. That means pretty much anything with a 'name' made in the past 20 years I would suggest.
