Canon Battery Compatability

Having dropped and killed our last Canon Ixus camera I've gone out and bought a new one. The question is, can I use the battery from the old camera in the new one, as a back-up, as the look nearly identical:

The old camera used a battery NB-6L 3.7V 1000mAh(Li-ion)
The new camera uses a battery NB-4L 3.7V 760mAh 2.9Wh (Li-ion)

Any thoughts?
