Car vs Camera Value!

I'm about to purchase a Canon 10-22 wide angle lens and realised something quite shocking.

2 years ago, I had a car worth £5k and a £80 point and shoot.

Now, I have a car worth £1200 and a £550 camera with £800 worth of lenses.

My camera gear is worth more than my car. Anyone else in a similar situation?

I reckon my car:camera value is about 40:60!

What a point!

I cannot justify changing my car these days, I've recently had to have a £2k gearbox rebuild which cost more than the car is now worth - c£2k. I have had this car 8 years and, as apart from its age there's nothing wrong, I have resigned myself to keep it for another 50k miles to get my moneys-worth.

Planning on spending £2.4k on a new Nikon - funded 80% from current Nikon and three lenses (leaving just five) - guess what? About £2k!


At least a new Nikon does more than 34mpg and costs less than £90 to fill up................

There's a flaw in that last statement somewhere, isn't there....?

What a point indeed. Never considered a comparison such as that, until now.

Due to a recent inheritence my camera gear almost doubles the worth of my car!! I drive nothing special, mind - ~£2.5k

So, do I buy a dearer car to reset the balance or buy another lens so it DOES double the value of the car???Hmm...

I've spent a fair bit on camera gear in the last couple of years (and more coming soon! ) but nowhere near the car!

Ratio of about 85% car to 15% camera for me

Equipment somewhere around £18k.

When the equipment pays for itself it's probably alot easier to tip the scales in that direction though.
Still, I would imagine most lenses depreciate less than a car would!

Couple of weekends back, OH brought some gear home from work.

Realised whilst out doing some MA project shots that the £500 Alfa had just over £25k of kit in the boot.





Needless to say, it wasn't left anywhere on it's own.

My gear is worth several times more than my current car.

Spent £2k on a 206 GTi 180 about a month ago but then went and spent £4.5k recently on a mint Canon 500mm F4L IS !!

Added with the rest of my gear, thats errr.... rather a lot!

Nothing unusual in this for the pros out there... The difference is that the camera stuff earns you money, the car costs you money...

Seriously thinking of exchanging the 911 for a D4 and a couple of bits of glass, myself: I have just purchased a perfectly adequate (and more suitable) 4x4, newer and with less miles, for the princely sum of £600 from fleabay, so the Turbo is a very expensive toy that keeps costing me money (£2,000 a year minimum in insurance, tax, tyres and maintenance alone). Whereas, I would hope to be able to earn several times that amount from some new kit (especially as I now have nearly 250,000 actuations on my D300S!)

Had a play with a D700 couple of weeks back.... OH was taking stargazing pics with it. Linked to iPad for it's settings and things. Awesome tech.

That's the plan for the future... Hopefully the former will help replace the 911 at some later date

My kit used to be worth quite a bit more than my mk1 MX-5, but considerably less than my (leased) new MX-5.

Having said that my camera gear is pretty much as I want it for the time being, so I can spend more money on cars again...

I was in a similar situation recently when my car cost less than my watch. The car died and a lesson was learnt.

I have that problem today. Watch is worth less than a grand.... That says more about my car I suspect
