Hi all,
Further to my thread about getting a DSLR for my birthday I had a play with my FIL's new 500D over the weekend and took my first ever DSLR photos!! Could not resist getting the twins at dinner.
Would be grateful for any feedback as I am keen to learn and will take criticism on the chin!
I think the low light has resulted in a slightly too warm hue, but overall I am pleased with the sharpness:

If you have an image manipulation program that has white balance adjustment, try knocking it down towards the blues a bit, if it has a Kelvin slider, try 4550k as a starting point and move around from there. You can do this on either a Jpeg or CR2 file, though it's easier and you have more granularity on the latter, you'll probably need to move the purples a bit as well btw

I think with babies, kids and even people shots in general, the trick is to just take as many shots as you can and be ruthless in sorting before choosing the ones to work on.
Before during and after should cover all aspects of
If you decide to take RAW, and spend a little bit on PP software, your benefits would be to tinker more successfully with white balance after the event, to be able to pull back highlights and look into shadows and have the best files for fighting noise in the low light shots. It almost feels like a cheat, but you can just worry about composition at shooting time when all the excitement's happening and sit down calmly and take control of your images in a moment of tranquility!
Photoshop Elements or Aperture are very affordable these days....
