Budget way into long glass, which would you buy?

Out of these two which would you get as a way of cheapo way of going longer than my current reach of 105mm (on a DX body, D90).

I'd save for something better. The s/h Nikon ED has been superseded by the VR now but should still beat the Tamron. My simplistic view is that a 300mm lens should really be 300mm long, and that the shorter it is, the more cramped up all the gubbins inside will be, with deleterious efects on image quality and aperture. But I may be wrong!

Have read quite a few reviews and it actually does better than I would expect it to (The Tamron this is).Gets a little soft over 200mm as expected but very usable up to 200 which is obviously longer than that on my DX anyways.
He'll let it go for the equivalent of 85 notes, used my friend 70-200 2.8 Sigma the other night which was nice but it was exactly ten times the price.
Would it produce images ten times better? I am not so sure.

Not really a valid comparison though - a 70-200mm f2.8 is different beast for a different job where quality and speed are more important than price or absolute range.Edited by Simpo Two on Sunday 26th February 15:19

Indeed, was the only real comparison I have to hand though over my kit lens for length, well other than a 150-500 I used once which was like holding the Hubble telescope.Edited by Simpo Two on Sunday 26th February 15:19
Having thought about it on the way home I am going to pass, the 'Stang needs 2 new shoes, missus wants a 2 week European jaunt early July and I want to get to Spain for kid brothers 30th in June.
Length will have to wait!
Hmm? What are you wanting the extra reach for? Using telephoto lenses to good effect is a clever alchemy of good glass, good light if necessary and impeccable technique. For something light and portable that you only rarely use at its limits is one thing. For always needing the length and the aperture and chance of further cropping where every pixel might count is another. Personally I'd hold out for the VR version Nikon if you could, otherwise there are secondhand manual options that can do well, and might prove even better VFM - but depending in what you're intending to use it for.....

Would imagine I would be doing a Safari before long, it's another thing on the missus' holiday list.Also have an idea to make some spare cash flogging photos at the Equestrian Centre she is doing a course at, this is where I used the 70-200 to see how that worked. Idea was to use this there as I can't rely on borrowing the Sigma every time.
Safari: I don't suppose you have anywhere to hire from, do you? Am not really a safari type myself, but would definitely be hiring something BIG.
What length do you need for Equestrian stuff? Is that something under daylight? Or floodlit? (Don't know much about horses.... and I don't tend to go too close, myself!!!)

Aforementioned 150-500 is still sat 2 floors below me at my mates, that thing is BIG, but slooooow.
the 70-200 was pretty spot on for the 'osses, couple with my own 24-70 would have all bases covered as they said I would be allowed to get closer if I stayed out the way, which I would, they bloody terrify me.
Under floodlights on a week night, under desert sunlight at the weekends
