5 replies and 4 of them that I wouldn't want anyone from the wedding to see!

Pics removed.

My thoughts...

The bride would eat the groom for breakfast!

Nice legs on the lady in photo 1

Looks like you were there on the first night judging by picture 12!

Seriously, the photos were nice and natural. I particularly liked your take on the cake. As a family friend or relative, never, ever offer to take the official photos for things like weddings and christenings. When it all goes wrong and you've paid a professional it's ok but when it goes tits up and it's down to you, there is no worst feeling in the world.

Too many skirts for my liking.....!

There's a couple of nice ideas there - often the little details might mean more to the people there than the professional can manage to take. Your treatment works well in some. Thinking back to my own (last) wedding I prefer the shot of the hands with rings on to any of the ones with my face in! But everyone has different ideas about what makes a good set of shots.

Not (necessarily) your issue, but they don't look very happy in the "Gretna Green sign" one do they? I'd have pinned 'em up against the sign and TOLD them to laugh at something! But I know what it's like sometimes as just a guest, and you have to fit in round someone else's agenda. Last time I took a camera to a wedding it was just a compact and I hadn't worked out how to use the blooming' thing (still haven't) because it was so slow to use.....

My thoughts. I hope you asked permission, especially given the comments relating to the Bride's healthy appetite.

As an ex-pro and spent a lot of my apprenticeship at weddings, here's my 2p worth:

  • Be aware of where feet are in relationship to the frame. The piper has his feet on the bottom of the image, it would have benefitted from just tilting the lens down a little. Again on #5 with the kiss at the altar.
  • You've got a good eye, but your set pieces are in a different league to the other shots. It's all to do with the way your brain works. I would guess you're analytical by nature.
  • Now consider shots #12 & 13 - perfect balance top to bottom. Look at the space you create between the bottom of the kilt & shoes and the frame compared to the 2 shots I mention above
  • don't be afraid to rearrange props. Shot #14 would be much better with the label to the front and the glasses crossed
  • be ruthless with your editing - lost shots 4, 6, 14 and find a better shot for the effect in shot #15
I don't mean to be negative and, at the risk of sounding patronising, I wouldn't normally bother, but there's some really good stuff in there. I like what you did with #8. #9 is a delight. #10 does nothing for me, but it is a good competent shot for the bride & groom (I always had to remember that my primary role was to please the customer, not to indulge my own photographic artistic sensitivities)

If I was right about you being more analytical, then I would suggest having a good look at landscape photography. Ansel Adams' 3 x books are classic text on this

Good luck
