looking for some help please

Not sure if this is the right place to post but thought i would give it a try.

My wife is going into hospital tomorrow for open heart surgery and i would like to surprise her when she gets out by transferring an 10 x 8 colour photo of myself and her at stonehenge into a poster size portrait in Black and white, but also i would like to have it sharpened up not just a straight forward copy from the original.

Is this possible and if so where, appreciate any help

Firstly, I'd like to send best wishes to your wife.

If the original digital file, or even a negative/transparency, was available, then it would be so much easier and the result would be better. If not, the print would have to scanned and the quality would be lost. How large do you want the poster to be?

probably 3' x 2' and unfortunately its would have to be a scanned copy

Some of the specialist Labs offer various levels of service for this type of thing. There are a few around the UK. The remaining High Street outlets may also be able to to it but whether a specific store has the most accomplished skills would be an unknown.

It is possible that some PHers may also be able to take on the task ...

How large is the original colour print? What size of film (or sensor if digital) was used to take the shot?

As well as the suggestions above, provided that the print is in good quality, I have actually taken the picture of the print to successfully produce a new print from it. Ok, it wasn't as large as 3'x2' but this could be something to consider as well. It was actually better quality than scanning the print.

Certainly worth a try. There is no reason to suppose that a scanner is better than the decent digital camera for the task given usable lighting. Potentially the required B&W result could be better than colour too for perceived sharpness.

My best wishes to you and your wife, I had a triple by-pass 8 years ago, it was worrying until you realise how many such ops take place every day with terrific results. I lead an ordinary and pretty full life so, all the best to her.

Best wishes to your wife. As to your poster problem, you may need to think about the size you want it, as a 10x8 print will not transfer to 3x2 without losing something, as 10x8 is a lot squarer than 3x2.
