Nikon 35mm F1.8

Guys,

Bought this lens as I understood it takes pin sharp portraits and gets great results in low light conditions. So far it has done as promised and I have been pleased with the results.

My question is this - other than nice portraits of the family what else could I potentially use this lens for? I guess my question relates to what types of photos are certain lenses best for (e.g. I assume telephoto best for sports; wide angle fixed for landscapes etc).

Any examples of photos you have taken with this (or similar lens) to give me some inspiration would be appreciated.

I would approach it the other way, ie 'This is what I want to photograph, what lens is the most suitable?'

The lens is really only like the interchangeable bit in a screwdriver set; you're asking 'I have this
new bit; I need to find some screws it will fit.'

If you're short of inspiration I'd suggest heading over to Flickr's Explore pages, or 500px, which has some amazing stuff on it.

Cheers John. Well I bought the 35mm primarily to take pictures of the wife and kids, events e.g. Birthdays / friends weddings.

Ultimately I guess I am interested in landscapes and shooting car shows (stills).

I guess the point of my question is I'm not planning on buying any new lenses any time soon but I have the 35 so interested in what others have used such a lens for.

Have a look at Blipfoto and type 35mm in the search box. You will see the sort of pictures other people have taken with that lens. It might give you the inspiration you are looking for?

I've got a Nikon 35mm 1.8 AFS and I love it. Not being flush with money to feed my growing photography habit, I purchased on of these for my Christmas present (yep for myself!). As you say, it's awesome for portraits of kids/wife, and I find myself leaving it on the body most of the time and using my legs to zoom! I visited the think tank science museum last week with the kids, was quite dark in there, so left the 35mm on and managed some good photos.

OK, well another way to think of it is in terms of angle of view. Close-focus permitting, the lens can photograph anything within that (fixed) angle of view - rooms, people, landscapes, donkeys, roundabouts, hotels, trees, whatever. One thing it wouldn't be good for IMHO is portraits, unless you like proboscis monkeys!

A 35mm lens on a crop sensor is fairly close to what the eye sees anyway, so it shouldn't be too difficult to imagine.
