For what purpose?

If I'm honest they all look a bit tampered and a little photoshop fake to me. I know some like that affect, but I prefer more natural photos.

B&W works well, but something just doesn't sit quite right.

Out of the selection I think I prefer number 1. Although if the image was being used as a backing image on a leaflet ad, then number 3 is a little more punchy, but evidently not so genuine.

And returning with something a bit more constructive: How does it look if you go the HDR route but take the sky and slightly desaturate and reduce contrast, but keep it even so it doesn't "halo" around the roof timbers? I suppose it a bit more like #1........

That is what I was trying to do in No1 (I produced the HDR first and could not get rid of the halo)

Maybe the wood tone is over saturated with colour?

All the timber seems to be blending in a bit. I tried winding the wood colour back a bit. Sorry to tinker, I can't help it.

As PP says, it does depend what you're trying to achieve. Straight LR and a Tone-Mapping.....

Just thinking ahead to my 2013 calender! I like some different techniques and subject matter

Had a play.

Levels, darkened the blacks a bit, adjusted the midrange a touch. Hue/saturation, desaturated the reds a touch, darkened the hue on the cyan a touch to darken the sky. Desaturated the whole image a touch then dodged and burned a few areas.

Ah right.

Of your original three then, I personally would opt for number 1, but I can't help thinking that the strong colours detract from the aged subject matter, particularly on the timber.
