A bookend maybe?

A very expensive bookend: the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS (and TC20EII) by tychay, on Flickr

What sort of money are you working with, and (piece of string question) will that be all you're spending or would you be thinking of adding to the collection over the next few years

The reason I ask, and it's weighted to what I have...I went through D40/D80/D300/D700 with a mixture of 50mm/85mm prime lenses, bought the usual 24-70, 70-200 and obligatory 10-20mm with a heap of everything in between

Last year I picked up a D7000 and the 28-300. I've not bought or used anything else since and havent found myself lacking camera ability or focal length. I do throw on a 50mm for silly depth of field shots every so often, but that combo has pretty much replaced everything I used to have. I've shot landscapes, portraits, close in headshots and general snaps when out and about. Combined, it's way over what you're thinking with a 5100 or 3200, but you'll find limitations with both of those bodies on focal points, ISO performance and probably want to upgrade the lens at some point if you buy a kit bundle. Depends on what you have to throw at it and what you think you'll get back tbh

Very amusing smart ass.

O/p if you want it for filming fast moving things ie cars/aircraft then the 5100 might not be the best option.

Oops, forgot the smiley wink

Not sure about Nikon to be honest, but dpreview.com can do side by side comparisons of the two (on my mobile just now so can't get the link for you).

I had the exact same choice to make recently.

After reading countless reviews, comparisons and comments, I decided that the D5100 was the best option. I got it for £485 from Jessops with some software freebies and 10months interest free credit.

The only thing that was really swaying me toward the D3200 was the wifi dongle, which would have been really useful alongside my phone, but ulitmately decided on the D5100. It should arrive on Monday, missed the delivery yesterday! Doh.

Some good advice here but I'd maybe question the bit in bold. The D5100 uses the D7000 sensor and it's not bad at all in terms of iso performance. I've been using one recently and it's probably less than a stop behind my D700 in most situations.
