It's time to update my trusty CRT monitor, and I was wondering if it's worth going for IPS monitor, or larger LED monitor. I'd like to hear your experience with them. I nearly made up my mind to go for a 27" LED (TN) but I've found out about IPS, which is supposed to be better for photo editing. Any thoughts/inputs on LED/LCD monitors appreciated. Thanks!
I went with IPS as I look at a lot of charts/text and I'd been really disappointed with my original upgrade from a 21" CRT to a 22" Viewsonic LED.
I did a bit of reading up about IPS and bought 2x 24" HP ZR24w which I'm happy with as they were significantly sharper for text and photography but this was compared to a less than stella Viewsonic and it was about 3 years ago so I'm not sure about the difference to a decent LED nowadays, maybe the gap isn't so large anymore ?

You seem to be confusing technologies.
All computer flat panels are LCD. Some are IPS some are TN.
These can be backlit by either fluorescent light or LED.
Apple monitors are ISP and LED etc (as are some HP and Dell).
Back lighting with LED tends to reduce the colour range to sRGB.
If your serious get a Dell ISP with CFL lighting.

I've never been able to get a good colour balance with LCD screens, especially the blue channel. Calibration has never been terribly convincing. I think you may have to pay LOTS of money and go Eizo or the top range NEC units. The better Dell and HP options seems to be OK. As, perhaps, Apple but when I looked at an Apple screen in demo in a dealer I was less than impressed with sharpness.
Currently my main screen is a cheaply obtained AOC 22" Touch Screen (bought for the touch screen as much as anythind as an experiement. It's LED lit. The Blue channel is further off than any of the others I have tried to calibrate and this one seems reluctant to do anything useful when playing wit calibration settings.
That said it's a great screen for editing (making allowances for the Blue channel extremes) and I can get prints that match the screen appearance pretty well despite a rather fragmented attempt at full workflow calibration.
Before trying this screen I was planning to get a Dell monitor. I may yet do so.
If I could justify it I think that something like NEC or Eizo at the £750 to £1100 price point (or above) might be the more satisfying option (probably a requirement if totally accurate colour matching is required) although one may then need to change them every 2 or 3 years to maintain the full operational performance expected.

I wish I could say £750-£1100 is my price range, but it's not! I'm looking at some Iiyama monitors atm as I've always used them for many years and find them very trusty, but also looking at Dell too.

Spec. changes have been a bit of an issue for the Dell monitors over recent years as I recall. Some years a model/size combinations gets rave reviews and others not so much - at least for semi-serious colour accurate editing work. At the time I last looked it was still the one to get in terms of value for money for the screen size but it seemed that you needed to buy carefully to get the optimum spec. and firmware if that was a concern.Gassing Station | Photography & Video | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
