What's causing the smudging?

Took this last night. Quite pleased, except for the blurry bits under the fireworks.

Any idea what causes this and how to avoid?

I'll have a stab.

Photography isn't my specialist subject, (that would be laying on the sofa), those smudges look like smoke from previous fireworks being illuminated by the current firework.

Also, there is a coloured blob on the right which I guess is the same thing but being lit from that blue light.

If this is the case, I reckon the only fix would be a post edit.

Apologies if I'm a mile off though.

It is smoke from the lifting charge that gets the mortar into the air. You could clone it out if you wanted, I don't think it detracts from the shot though.

The bluey-green mark in both looks like a bit of lens flare, but the others look like smoke to me.

What do you mean, it's definitely some evil spirits being banished with the loud noises and flashes of light

On the right hand side spot is obviously lens flare.

The rest is just smoke illuminated by the light. As mentioned, you could photohshop it out using heal tool, but I think that is pretty standard when shooting fireworks.

Here is one I did years ago:



You can clearly see the smoke in these, because they're quite low to ground. The light from the fireworks gives them a hue.
