Photoshop for numpties

When I say that I mean me, I'm new to photoshop and need to get some of the basics nailed quickly.
For example I have a bunch of photos where certain areas need to be lightened and others darkened how can I selectively make the changes? Are there any good on-line resources, YouTube channels etc?

There are plenty of photoshop videos on youtube, just search for photoshop tutorial and possibly include a description of what you are trying to do.
If you can get your head round layers and masks, it will stand you in good stead for pretty much most things that you would want to do in photoshop.
