Video Editing

Hi,

I'm looking for a some basic video editing software, that does not takes for ever to process HD video.

I'm currently using Windows live Movie maker, its does all I need, as mainly only need to crop the video, and either burn to DVD or upload to youtube.

only problem I have it takes ages to pre-load the video.

I've tried the demo versions of Sony Vegas and studio, and they load the video very quickly, but takes 4-5 hours to them save a 20 minute video. plus they are maybe a little over complex for my needs.

The only feature that would he handy that I don't think the windows version does is have a quad screen, so If I have more than one video of some action, from different angles, I can show them all split or quad screen.

Ideally I don't want to spend more than say £100, as its just to upload our incar race video's, that I'm doing for free.

I've not long downloaded Avids Pinnacle Studio 16. Cost about £80 and can do much more than I'll ever likely need.

I trialed it along with Sony Vegas before purchasing Avid. For me Avid was the one I found more intuitive.

Now, from my experience, your problems with the time it takes to process video data is not so much to do with the program you're using, but more with the power of your pc. When I ran an AMD 2.3ghz (or something like that) chip thingy, 4Gb of ram and Windows XP, it took forever to do the job.

Not long upgraded to a solid state hard drive, 16Gb ram and an Intel i5 super quick chip thingey with windows 7 64bit. The difference in processing power is remarkable. Cost a few quid to replace all that (along with new main board) but so far I'm delighted.

Bingo. You need the most beastly machine (64 bit CPU and loads of RAM) you can afford to work with HD footage. The software performance is minor by comparison.

I know a lot of it is down to processing power, but the free windows live program can do the job 4 times quicker than a pro package.

I know it's never going to be instant on the hardware I have, Duel core 2.13ghz 4GB ram and 256GB SSD

but 5 hours for 20 minutes is a bit much.

As said I'm doing this for free in my spare time, so not wanting to spend 1K+ on hardware to speed it up. I've already spent £200 on a SSD

I'll give Avids Pinnacle Studio 16, a try and let you know what I think.

That's pretty much the spec of my old machine and I could render that in about an hour. What format are you outputting to? Some are faster to encode than others (some have multiple passes too).

not sure now, I did try a few different ones, but there is in some ways too many to choose from, with very little info, or time or size of the finished movie. but they all seems to have a estimate of 4+ hours. as said windows live would output 1080P HD option in about 1 hour. but you would have to wait about the same for it to pre-load.

Ok I've tried Pinnacle Studio 16
and It seems 2-3 times quicker than Vegas, still trying to get to grips with it, seems to have some nice options, even if they do them is a strange way. also has a built in Disc menu system, Sony's is yet another product you have to buy, still trying to work out how it works though.
