Nikon UK model and packaging question

Quick question, Anyone know why some Nikon products come in different packaging? Black/ gold for some and Gold for others? Is that an indication of origin? Is there an easy way to identify a Uk DSLR from non UK in the used market?

Just noticed there is an all black tall box also?

Don't know about box colour, but 'UK' stock is denoted by the first digit of the serial number.

Found this on the net:

2 - Japan
3 - USA
4 - Europe (excluding UK)
5 - Canada
6 - Australia / New Zealand(?)
7 - Asia (excluding Japan)
8 - UK

From buying a range of new & used stuff I'd always figured different packaging styles were down to age. What's the stuff you're looking at?

Whilst reading the classifieds of various sites, models like the D90 and D7000 are both advertised in either Black, Gold or a combination of both, which might count out it being age related. One thing it might be is the kit seems to be black/gold combo and the body only in gold?

Hmm, I have 7 Nikon Cameras sourced in the UK and not one starts with '8'? Neither do any of the 12 lenses. One lens I bought in Hong Kong starts with a '4'.
