DIN, ISO, ASA ?

I mentioned ASA in one of my thread replies, and interestingly, this got picked up on (and commented on in a in another completely different thread). Is it that I’m at a “certain” age and old habits die hard.

As a quick test – How do other PHer’s refer to sensitivity ratings ?

ISO for me. At a recent wedding the middle aged photographer boasted of the "ASA" on his 1D

It was ASA in film days but with the arrival of digital somehow it changed to ISO. The numbers are the same but of course things have to be changed so they look more modern. Woo. Even my local car auctions is now a 'remarketing company'.

DIN I think is a German standard and a memory cell tells me that 100ASA is 19 DIN, but I'm not going to Google to check.

I’ll own up and admit I did.

Who would guess that Din 24 was twice as fast as DIN 21 ?? (or something like that)

Yeah I remember DIN settings as I used to shoot a lot of Agfachrome which was rated using DIN. Used 18 and 21 mostly.

I thought ASA and ISO co-existed during the latter film years - as did DIN of course but mainly associated with German product lines.

I would guess that Globalisation led to the adoption of the International standards supplanting the separate ASA and DIN (and any other that may have been around in other parts of the world) standards as time passed. For example GOST.

ISO just accepted and re-branded ASA afaik. (With a few adjustments to the standard along the way according to Wikipedia.)
