Editing and archiving software

Any recommendations for affordable photo editing and archiving software. I want something easy to use, but with some decent features I can grow into...

I don't have anything except for the Nikon ViewNX software I just got with my camera.

The GIMP - the builds here are fab in my opinion - it's free so you've nothing to lose if you don't get on with it!

Lightroom would be my choice of software, the price has reduced recently too, but it is still professional software, so possibly not the easiest to use. Photoshop Elements is cheaper, but I can't comment on the image management side of it. Both have free trials available.

If you're on a Mac Aperture would be worth looking at, it is a bit more advanced than iPhoto. If you want free software Google Picasa might be worth a look.

I think Lightroom is a good call.

It's come down to a good price. Although a long term user, I don't think it would be too difficult to get acquainted with. Plenty of support online and through books (like Scott Kelby's excellent offerings), and:

You can take it round the block on a trial basis.


Similarly Aperture has a lot of similar features for Mac. Capture, et al, may be a bit more specialist/professional and undoubtedly can give equal and better results, but ultimately it's what you get comfortable using..... Trial versions are your friend!
