How weatherproof is a 7D?

As it's not waterproof I'd always er on the side of caution, once the camera starts to get noticeably wet then I get mine under cover. Also you need to bear in mind what lens you've got fitted. Most (all?) Canon L lenses have a rubber seal to keep water out of the lens mount. If you haven't got that, then you're very liable to water getting in there.

I try to avoid water on my cameras wherever possible, even though the 7D should withstand getting rained on. As for L lenses, they are apparently (according to Canon) waterproof once they have a filter screwed onto the end of them. This does nothing for the image quality though and is best avoided. Non L lenses aren't waterproof. Easier and safer to buy or make a rain cover for your gear if you have to use it in the rain.
When you get your 7D, check the firmware version fitted. Chances are it will need upgrading unless you get lucky and happen to get one produced in the last few weeks.

I'm afraid I can't provide a link - but one of the DigitalRev Kai Wong reviews (all of which are both informative and hilarious) tests a 7D to destruction. It takes a ridiculous amount of abuse and still works.

Mine has been out in drizzle and I'm pretty clumsy. I did have a near miss with dropping it in the sea which may have been terminal though (or if not terminal certainly hard to get back).
When you do get the camera make sure it's on the latest firmware, it made a big difference.
Maybe My 7D is not built to normal 7D standards, but it ain't waterproof at all, any rainspots even fog or mist cause it to stop working
Conversely my 60D is tougher though the screen fails whenever theres dampness around, the screen gets the telltale mist inside. 60D still takes pictures though the photo review ain't possible coz the screens U/S
Its easy to re-activate the 7d & 60D's screen - leave them in a warm airing cupboard overnight.

There is a weather sealing diagram that I have seen that didnt fill me with any confidence in taking mine anywhere near rain. I have also seen a letter from Canon stating that the 7D is NOT weather sealed in anyway and any water damage will void the warranty. saying that though, I have used my 7d in light rain a few times and never had a problem but I dont jump at the chance to test it's limits.

For the 60D, it says weather resistance applies to the battery & memory card doors only. For the 1D and 5D Mk II it just says "yes" for weather proofing, and for the 7D and 5D Mk III it says "Yes, equivalent to EOS 1-N, whatever the hell that means.

And there i was just about to post that little story...i forgot i'd done it previously.Oh, i did by a MKIV. I still use the 7D too, i'm just a lot more careful with it these days.
