Printer recommendations

Hi all,
Ive got a couple events coming up that require on the fly printing on the day, each event is approx 200-250 people. I don't usually do a lot of printing and especially not for clients, but normally I use a Canon 9500mkII when its required. Tt's got a lot ot recommend it , image quality being the main one for me, but it as some serious drawbacks too, the stunning rate it uses ink is sometimes beyond comprehension and if its not been in action for a while it tells you certain inks are 'out of condition' and thers no way round this aside from replacing the cartidge. (which drives me crazy)
At 110 earth pounds for the set (theres 10 inks) it could get a little pricey in inks , I'm thinking that it may be cheaper to buy a decent A4 printer that is still competant but doesnt go through ink like Oliver Reed through scotch. I used to have a Canon i9900 and used to get approx 40 a4 out of that per set but inks were cheaper for that, the 9500 does less but is higher quality.
Client isnt looking for prints that won't fade for 7000 years or the need to archive anything from this, its just some added fun to keep the people they're entertaining amused basically. Doesnt need to be bigger than A4 , although A3/A3+ suggestions welcome as bigger boxes tend to keep clients happier don;t they.
I know i could trawl the web but camera forums irritate me due to the mindless gearhead bickering it always descends into so i htought id turn it over to the PH massive....

Not sure you would get the throughput speed from a smaller printer and yes, inks are expensive although you might, given you comments about not looking for archival quality, get away with some fairly cheap paper and compatible inks. In which case maybe a couple of cheap A4 printers running non-OEM inks would work nicely.
I have an old Canon 6600D dye ink machine that produces great results for what it is but the startup cleaning process for occasional use results in huge ink consumption per print. Running a good long batch tends to be much better as far as I can judge. I was looking at printers earlier this week and noticed that the pigment inks for the 9500 are less costly than the dye inks for the 9000, though there is not much in it. The 9000 uses the same ink and tanks as my 6600.
Renting a dedicated events system, as previously suggested, is something I would seriously consider based on the numbers you mention. A would imagine the economics are similar but the look of the prints should be more 'photo print' like and the dedicate editing system that usually comes with them is likely to be more productive than a general editor/semi-pro printer setup.
