Recommend me a camera £300

Hi all
I'm a complete beginner when it comes to photography and have spent most of my time taking pictures with my iPhone, but I've recently decided I need to up my game a little bit and buy a decent camera
I want to spend around £300 (+/- £100 or so) and it doesn't need to be too compact as I can carry it in a bag rather than pocket
Most of my pics will be cars (generally stationary) and my kids messing about too
It needs to fairly easy to use initially (my mrs will use it too, and she's looking for an easy auto function) but with some better features whn. Get to learn it a bit better
Any advice or tips would be greatlY appreciated

I'm about to buy a Nikon D3100 after asking a simlar question on here I wnet and had a look and play with a couple of cameras and for me this one appears to do what I want.

As a Canon user, I'd definitely say get the D3100 over and above the 1100d.

Better IQ (although this can be subjective), less noise and a higher ISO capability, bigger screen, plus it'll do video stuff if you're that way inclined.

Not everybody has the opportunity to try out various cameras. I came across Camerlabs when I was researching earlier in the year. The site is run by Gordon Laing who used to write for (and later edit) Personal Computer World magazine.

Nikon vs Canon; buy whatever your friends have.

If you keep a commonality with your friends photography becomes a very forgiving hobby, you can ask questions about menus, swap a lens occasionally, etc.

If you ever see a Nikon and Canon user in the same room, it's like a first date gone wrong. VR, EF-S, it all gets horribly confusing.

And if you are the first person to buy, then buy Canon obviously

Good recommendation. Also, if you can get to a camera shop which has both in stock, have a play. Pick them up, push a few buttons, and see which one feels better in your hand.

If you want a dSLR, then I'd go second hand from a decent source. I've used MPB and LCE without issue in the past.

I don't know Nikon, as I am a Canon user - but a second hand 30D with lens will give decent shots and some room to learn how to use the camera.

I had a 300D when they first came out, and it only took 8 months before I became frustrated at the lack of control, so went for a second hand 20D shortly after.
