Chaps - I downloaded a sample of Lightroom 4 to start using as a PP tool: but it is appallingly, devastatingly slow on my machine (top of the range at the time 2010 Macbook Pro, so not a dinosaur).
I've upgraded the OS, played with settings as said o the internet, and it's still horrifically awful.
Rather than buy the full priced version and have the same issues, I thought I'd just use Apple's own Aperture - primary motivations being that it will migrate stuff out of the iPhoto programme I've been using while I started learning, and it's cheap. And should be fast, on my machine.
Given that I am an amateur hobbyist, are there any major objections to the Apple software that you guys have after using it? I know it's not as good as LR or PhotoShop - but it's a lot cheaper and seems to be built for the hardware/operating system I use...

Hmm - thanks chaps. I think I need to ask basic questions, as reading about the various options is actually making me more confused!
Is there one programme that will allow me to merge photos (HDR and panorama) as well as do all the usual image correction/enhancement stuff, preferably with some sort of oraganiser? Or will I have to use more than one programme for all of this. Fore example, I like iPhoto's organiser and web publishing abilities - but can I use something else for image manipulation before organising photos in this way?
Am I best buying Aperture (as a logical step up from iPhoto) and a dedicated stitching/HDR programme, for example?
Any help through this minefield would be much appreciated...

If you've been using iPhoto for a while Aperture is the logical upgrade as the workflow is very similar.
As mentioned above, the alternative would be Photoshop Elements for the more advanced processing and continuing to use iPhoto for management etc. My understanding is that the version of Elements in the Mac App store has got the management part of it removed as iPhoto is just as good/better.

Have just discovered that Aperture 3 means upgrading my snow leopard operating system to Lion or Mountain Lion. Something I don't really wish to do, as this sort of thing has a history of screwing with battery life, memory, and other things that work just fine. PS Elements is getting another look...

Have a hunt round and see if you can find anyone still selling the boxed edition, this will install fine on snow Leopard. Ebay may be your friend here (there's one on now at £1.20 with 4 days to run).Once you get it, OSX software update will want you to install 3.4. Don't do it yet, it's buggy as hell!!
Instead, install the 3.3.2 update (http://support.apple.com/downloads/DL1561/en_US/Aperture3.3.2Update.dmg).
