After two weeks of carrying 60D, 70-200mm and 17-55mm around Thailand on holidays, I've decided I need a lighter setup.
After reading all possible previews on the net, I bought a Nex 6 body plus 50mm 1.8 prime. I'm planning to add 18-200 to that for a travel setup.

And I'm not too impressed. Image quality is worse than my 60D with Sigma 50mm 1.4 which I kind of expected, but the biggest problems are focussing (in a dark pub last night it was a nightmare, hunting for focus most of the time, where 60D with Sigma attached would have it in instant) and battery life. After 2h of casual shooting, no flash etc, around 100 photos, I was left with 46% battery. I really need to carry few of them with me (which take 4h to charge from empty) if I ever go away.

I also definitely need a wider prime, but 35mm isn't out until Dec and 24mm Zeiss is crazy expensive so 50mm has to do until then.

What are your experiences with Nex-es?

I just take the 7d and sigma 17-70 if space is limited.
I do have a point and shoot but really miss the quality and ease of the SLR when I don't have it.

Still too big and too heavy.
Plus having to carry a camera backpack instead of a normal one so limited space etc etc.

You put convenience ahead of performance and paid the price... if you want the results you have to carry the gear smile

What focussing and exposure mode were you using?

Single point (centre) and full frame for exposure AFAIR

The fact that I wasn't too impressed didn't stop me from buying more stuff for it though smile

I hate this whole "get a lighter setup" idea now, my wallet is almost 2k LIGHTER though...
I bought a Tamron 18-200 and Sony Zeiss 24mm 1.8 so I'm pretty much done on the travelling kit.

If only I wouldn't spend all the travelling budget... smile

Sorry to hear your problems, I've been using my trusty 5N with the 50mm prime for a year now and have not experienced those kinds of problems. Always been amazed at it's low light performance.

I wonder if it's a firmware issue?
