My eldest lad wants a camera for Xmas - he's 13, likes taking pictures of his brother playing rugby - but wants something a little better than his phone or ipod! I was thinking of a bridge camera - budget will be a stingy £150 (ish) and something that wont be too fragile would be great. Any suggestions?

Your budget is on the low side for the later Bridge cameras, but take a look here to get some data on last years (and earlier) models : http://www.bridgecamera.org.uk/

Bridge cameras are not particularly rugged though.

Does your son just want a better camera or is he actually interested in getting into photography?

If it's the former, you might be better off looking at non-bridge compact camera - there are some cracking cameras around the £150 mark.

In any case, it might be better to go on a shopping trip with your son to try out some cameras in the price range.

Cameras are very much down to personal taste, and what feels good in the hand and easy to use for one person may be totally unsuitable for an other.

The problem with photographing sports like rugby is that the action is happening quite far away and the subject is moving quite fast, which aren't a good combination to take pictures of with a cheaper camera, although I guess that would be an improvement over a phone/iPod.

My general advice is that cameras from the traditional manufacturers (Canon/Nikon) are the best bet as the lenses are more important than the electronics inside the camera and don't get too hung up on more megapixels being better, anything over 8MP should be fine. With regards to construction, in the past I've found the Canon Ixus range to be good as they tend to have metal bodies.
