Apples? I use movie maker on the win7 machine. It copes quite happily with the .mp4 from the go-pro. Certainly good anti for editing, and other basic stuff. Personally I blame H&S for making facilities for hoop and stick fun unavailable.
On 'apples' iMovie is pretty good as well. Both free. If he likes doing that sort of thing, get him something a bit more 'pro' later.
