Video cameras - Please recommend

I have been using a JVC GR-DVP7E since purchasing several years ago. This has been a good video recording device for capturing my children growing up.
Slowly things like the fold out screen etc, have started failing and it is not cost effective to repair.
I would like to upgrade and wonder what people are using these days? I don't need any super dooper camera just something as good as my JVC.

Oh - and my current camera uses Mini DV tapes which i have been using my laptop to convert to DVDs.
