Cine transfer?

I have a box full of cine films, all old family stuff from the 50s/60s. I have been meaning to get them into iMovie and edit them to a DVD, ageing relatives are now making this more urgent.
So what are my options?
I have experimented in the past with my own camcorder videoing directly from a small bright cine screen. I did get good results but the flicker from the 16 frames/s (I think?) was noticeable. But this is a cheap easy option I can do at home, however...
If I'm going to do this I would like to get the best definition possible. I have seen on TV a new process where they digitise each individual frame and then re-work these into a flicker free movie, anyone know anything about this? Any experiences?
My Father spliced many short 3min films together into 30min reals. I reckon I have 4 hours+ of footage.
Somewhere in the SE or London would be ideal as I'd like to take my film there myself and talk about my requirements.
