lots of rumours that Jessops is about to enter administration, so if you have any gift cards go spend them soonest!
Be a shame for them to go, not many high street photography specialists left (In Aberdeen there are no indie photo shops so Jessops was the only option if you wanted something there and then)

t. Bought a compact with a 3-year warranty from them at Christmas (rather than Amazon)

Yep, seems like it unfortunately.
To be honest I've no idea how they managed to survive the last bit of trouble they were in. I used to window shop at Jessops in Hull everyday on my way to college before finally buying a Zenith. Nearly a quarter century on, it's pretty good going to survive this long with the online competition.

Also heard it from a reliable source in the industry this week. Cash flow has been a big issue for some time which is the main reason for a lot of their bargain deals recently.
A colleague went into one of their stores last week and bought 15x quality compacts on the Co. card at a price even his store could not buy the units at trade. No queries as to why he wanted that many. He will then resell of course, once the ripples subside.....

It is sad, we need more camera shops on the high street. The York one was just moved, I'd not been in till last week (only just moved back to York last week) but was impressed, it was one of their flagship stores. I thought it would be handy as they had a good supply of accessories, batteries and chargers for high end models etc, which their previous shop didn't have.

Very sad, as Mark says we need more camera shops on the high st. There were a few people at the Cambridge store who were very helpful.

First Jacobs and now Jessops...
Kind of annoying if you ever need something the same day, even if you have to pay a little more, or have a look at bags/tripods before buying them.
Hopefully they'll reduced the number of stores and then keep trading, there are three in Edinburgh when one larger one would do.

It's a shame, but to be honest, they seem to be architects of their own downfall to me.
Was a time when you'd go in and they had loads of cameras to choose from, lenses, other gadgets and a little shelf that handled film processing. Often you'd come out with something!
Nowadays, there's the same handful of cameras in each shop, whilst most of the shop looks more like a Snappy-Snaps (sans the George Michael 4WD in the shop window) with a big laser printer to churn out expensive prints.
I can get prints done much cheaper (and at least as well) online, but if I wanted a camera I'd like to go in, handle it and, if the price is decent, buy one.
My wife bought my original Pentax DSLR from them and they were, apparently, very helpful, but when I went in to ask about the latest Pentaxes I was told they 'only sell them online'.... Not everyone wants one of 3 differently priced Nikons or Canons, and it's not much better with compacts or bridge/the new not-quite-SLR cameras.
My sympathies line with the staff, can't be fun to be facing a new year in retail with a risk of losing your job, but I can't imagine this really surprises many people who've seen the shops' slide into irrelevant mediocrity, sadly.
