Giottos MTL8360B/MTL8361B Tripod

I'm thinking of getting one and wasnt sure about what head to get. Ball or 3 way pan/tilt. I take a mixture of landscape, motorsport and wildlife pics so it would need to be secure using a long zoom lens. Advice needed.

Personal preference - I prefer pan/tilt but never lock the pan. Many here seem to prefer the speed of a ball head but once you've loosened it you've lost all three axes.

Long telephotos have their own mount so balance is better.

What about holding a Nikon 70-200 f2.8...or do they come with its own mount. Currently got a Nikon D600 with Nikon 24-70 F2.8 and Nikon 70-300.

...and you want to mount anything of that size by the lens. Some of the collars and feet on Nikkors are better than others. I had a Mk 1 70-200mm and, apart from changing to a Swiss/Arca fitting foot which was even better built than the original, it was a pretty stable lens when on a tripod. (The 300mm f/4 is notoriously flimsy, though)
