Not sure how many people are in to timelapse stuff on here but I have being playing around for the last year or two with it. Not really done too much but thought it may be worth having a thread dedicated to it giving that I am starting to get more in to it.

Here is one from a few years ago when I first started mucking about with TL.

And here is a quick clip from last weekend where I was out playing with the 5Dmk3.

Love these, very nicely done. Perhaps if you can remember them, you could share your settings?

Settings can vary quite a bit depending on cloud speeds however I tend to work on 1 shot every 1 to 8 seconds obviously 1 being very quick moving clouds and 8 being slow moving. For sunsets I tend to go for 1 shot every 8-10 seconds.

For stars it's governed by ISO values and how far you want to push it.

With my 7D I was having to do ISO 1600, f3.5 (lowest the lens would go to) and an exposure every 20-25 seconds. With the 5dmk3 I am down to ISO800 with an exposure lasting 25 seconds to get less noise.

If you are interested in catching stars/milky way then it's handy to have a smart phone or similar with you with something like Google Skymaps to plot the movement of the stars and see where would be best. I tend to now take my iPad with me using StarWalk which is brilliant for finding out where things are and getting the camera set up.

A good forum to use is http://forum.timescapes.org/phpBB3/index.php and there is a wealth of knowledge on there and some good tips/inspiration.

Do any of your chaps know of any free software that can create a time lapse video from a normal avi video?

Basically i have footage from my dash cam that id like to turn into a 5 minute or less movie about our drive around croatia.

At the moment all i have is an enormous and very very long avi

Do you have Windows Movie Maker installed?

If so import the footage then just speed it up.

Wow these are great. I think around 5-10s of timelapse footage is about the correct period to avoid getting bored, (maybe I just have a short attention span) so I preferred the second link.

May I ask how much shooting time you need (assuming 1 pic every 8s) to get a 5-10s edited timelapse?

I do like the second one.

You can view a selection of mine here https://vimeo.com/54592078 and if you can't be bothered watching the whole thing then the timelapses appear at:

20 seconds,
2min 17
2min 52
4min 26
5min 29
7min 23
7min 51

All were shot on a Canon 350D a kit lens and a magic arm. The durations varied from 10 seconds during the day and about 20 seconds at night. With 24 frames per second you can do the maths to see how long it takes.

Good old censorship in Germany, all I see is "This video contains content from UMG, who has blocked it in your country on copyright grounds." biggrin

Yes - a couple of my german friends said much the same - it seems the German Government don't want you listening to the Temptations - however an alternative source I put up for them is here http://vimeo.com/57953279

Took this is a hot air balloon festival in late summer. Stuck my GoPro to the roof of the car and made the movie in Picassa.
