Need some advice on repairing a lens.
It's a Nikkor 18-135mm kit lens which I use on a D5000 body. Seems to work really well towards the telephoto end but when shooting wide (anything wider than about 35mm) the focusing is really inconsistant across the frame. The centre seems to be sharp sometimes but others will look like a double exposure with 2 images overlayed but slightly offset. The focus gets worse towards the edges of the frame.
This fault was apparent when I bought the lens (ebay second hand special) so I sent it back to the guy who said he had it looked at and adjusted. It did come back much better and I was happy with it. He said it was one of the rear elements out of alignment and easy to sort.
Having used the lens on and off for a few months now, the problem seems to have returned. I just got back from Holiday and a number of the pictures have this inconsistant focus problem across them.
First off, where would people recomend I take the lens for someone to have a better look? I dont really want to take it somewhere that will send it off. Does anyone know anywhere local to Stoke On Trent or in the Midlands that repairs in house?
Anyone have any idea of ball park figures for a repair or even for someone to have a look? Can pick these lenses up on ebay for around £100-£140 so wouldn't really want to pay much to get it repaired.

They will probably say they would need to look at it before giving you a quote. There may not be much cost difference between repair and replace but then at least you know what you have if it has been repaired.

My thinking was that if the repair was a quick and easy job, say under £100, I would get it done. As you say, atleast I know it's repaired. But if it's going to cost more, these lenses are selling for £60-70 as faulty on ebay so I would just sell it on and put that towards another or a similar lens.

You can walk in and discuss on a weekday. I've been a few times with different kit (Canon in my case). Quite "Old school" and nice people but you are unlikely to get a quote until they have had a look at it (in my experience). Lessons learned over a long time I suspect.Dropped them an email.
