The danger of Lithium Ion batteries ...

err, well, Boeing Dreamliners, obviously, but not plugged into anything and sent through the post?
Looking for some parts for out washing machine today and happened upon the Bosch spares supplies site where I happened to see a note that said this:
"Lithium Battery Delivery Restrictions
Lithium batteries have been added to the Royal Mail Group list of dangerous goods and therefore we are unable to ship these items using this courier. If you require such an item you will be prompted to select our Express or Next Day service which uses DPD who are continuing to ship these items."
Now that was new to me and potentially has all sort of repercussions for people using devices the contain Lithium batteries. I do wonder if there are restrictions over a certain size but have not checked yet.
Anyway, over 2 7Dayshop, from where I have bought excellent low cost camera specific Li-Ion batteries before. They would, presumably, have to use the Mail to make their service work.
Well, lots of AA and AAA and stuff offered but NO CAMERA OEM ALTERNATIVE batteries at all as far as I could tell. Shock and horror. Didn't bother to see if they were dropping the Mail for deliveries of their mass market sized batteries.
So, for backup batteries at a sensible (ish) price we seem to be stuck with Amazon and eBay. And, if the Postal stuff is correct, a parcels service rather than the mail.
Something odd about all of this. Anyone have any deeper information?

Sales of Lithium Batteries at 7dayshop.com have been temporarily stopped
As of Monday 14th January 2013, Royal Mail have prohibited Lithium batteries being sent through their postal network. We are currently working on alternative courier postal options for these items and will begin to sell and deliver these items in the UK* as soon as we can. This will, however, mean increased delivery costs for all Lithium batteries. Until the courier options are in place, all Lithium batteries have been removed from our website.

We're very sorry that legislation outside our control will lead to our customers having to pay more for the delivery of Lithium batteries. 7dayshop.com will still continue to supply Lithium batteries to our customers but we hope you will understand the reasons for the increased delivery charges.
When we do start to sell Lithium batteries again, we recommend that you take advantage of our Multi-Buy prices and also order more of our products at the same time to consolidate the increased delivery costs.

Ain't just RM, there are worldwide restrictions on these batteries going by regular mail following some 'incidents'. Couriers will still move them with appropriate cover and insurance, though.
Ah, well, next I suppose we will not be able to travel with a loaded camera or phone or laptop.This could get quite interesting.
Anyone seen anything in the press about it? Considering the implications this one seems to have slipped underneath the radar. Or at least under my radar ...
I am sure one of the reasons that go pro were having such a hard time shipping and delivering the new model on time was to do with restrictions on lithium Ion batteries.
Bit of a problem for pretty much all of the equipment I manufacture as well as it uses Lithium batteries and we have already had a few problems getting the stuff onto helicopters to go offshore!
