Might be fun - time to test my skills against fast-moving targets again! Any other East Anglian camera-freaks up for it? We could make a mini-convoy.

'For one weekend each September, over 500 buildings fling open their doors to the public and turn the capital into a living architectural exhibition.

And it’s absolutely free!

Now all you need to do is get hold of the Buildings Guide (available from 23rd August) …

Buy online
The 64 page Buildings Guide for 2004 is available from 23 August. Buy by credit card on our secure link to WorldPay and your guide will be posted first class. Price £3.75 including first-class p&p.'

So it's absolutely free except that you have to buy a list to tell you which friggin' buildings are open? Not sponsored by BT is it?

Yup, totally free. Go to the Buildings Information / Online search bit. You get most of the info there anyway. More often then not the first place you go to has loads of the booklets to give away free anyway.

You have to book to see some places but the goodies like FCO / Customs House (that's really good, just don't go with drugs as they have niffer dog diplays ) you can walk straight in (with a very short queue maybe).

Just got back home from a cracking day at Biggin Hill . Looks like we picked the best day for weather.
We had a nice vantage spot overlooking Canary Wharf and the City, which made for a nice backdrop.

Here's a few of todays efforts:

Hurricane gets my vote Unusual angle, plus U/C going up.

Also great crossover shots of the Red Arrows - what technique did you use?

OK - tecchy question coming up for D10 owner - what kind of metering did you use on the Hurricane shot?

Spot metered, but used a basic rule of:
Any Jet = 'Sports Mode'
Any Prop = TV 1/250

any thoughts simpo ?

Good - 'cos that's what I tried last time and just wondered if you had a different way. Great minds etc!
If TV is Canon-speak for shutter priority, we agree again. And the great thing is that you can check the image and adjust if necessary. You could also try 1/125, focal length permitting.
As for Sports Mode... well... what it actually does is increase the shutter speed over what the normal Program setting would give you. Being a bit of a purist I think Modes on a DSLR is like having an automatic gearbox on a TVR, but it's worked OK.
(So Tipp-Ex out the icon of the little running man and put a jet plane icon on top!)

Yes TV is Canon speak for Time Value ie. Shutter Speed priority. Sometimes 1/250 doesn't blur the prop enough , so you can go down to 1/125, but best to leave it on the tri-pod then.
I'm still learning this game.

The guy standing next to me had a 10D with a lens (with converters) equaling 860mm , you could see the pilots eyes
Some of his pictures were stinning. He gave me his email , so i'll post a link to some of his pics when I get it. He's a real pro

Mode 1,2 or off with the IS on the 100-400IS? I find if I point my one at planes (especially at high angles) it doesn't work too well. My 28-135IS goes potty if you point it straight up.

I love the 100-400IS for sports stuff. Can't beat that pump action.

Great pics again. Wish I'd gone to that on Sunday and done all the open house stuff on Saturday....Ah well.

Great shots

There's always something special about a shot of a spitfire that makes the hairs stand up on the back of the neck.

and the sound of that engine - oh
