Picture rotation (stupid question)

I sometimes take a picture with the camera on its side (so i can take a picture of something or some one stood up) ,when i view the picture on my computer using windows photo gallery, and i rotate the picture to how it was taken,the image appears to have become squashed .Is there something that i can use or a program or am i being a bit stupid ?

Zoom in?

Depending on what resolution you are using it is bound to look squashed in full size. Either that or turn your monitor to portrait.

Its makes the subject (in the case of a person) look short as it seems to compress the picture(when rotated to appear as it was when the shot was taken,i don't mind the actual picture being smaller but i want the image to remain in proportion as to when it was taken.(hope this makes it a little clearer) If not i will get my 7 yr old daughter to help !

Unless I am wrong, rotating using the native Windows software it shouldn't compress the image at all.

It simply looks 'compressed' because the image is zoomed out, or smaller, so it can fit the image vertically rather than horizontally.

Well the aspect ratio should be the same. If it's changing (ie a rectangle becomes a square) something is wrong, but I can't tell you what as it's never a problem I've met. Is there anything like 'constrain proportions'?
