Nikon D7000 or??

So I'm looking at buying a DSLR, I will admit it will be my first DSLR. So I don't want anything too advanced, or expensive.
I have narrowed my search down to the Nikon D7000.
I have looked on the review websites, and they all seem to contradict each other vs the Canon's in the same price bracket. So I come to the experts at PH for RL experience and feedback!
I should note the D7000 I am looking at is coming with a 28-55mm and 55-300mm VR lens package. Again I have read mixed reviews about these lenses... so welcoming feedback on this also!

On the presumption you're buying brand new, have you thought about the Pentax K5 II or a pre-owned K5?
Take a read and you'll often see it compared against the more expensive D7000, since both share the same Sony 16MP sensor - making a better job of low light high ISO noise than Sony themselves do.
Coupled with both being weather resistant, you'll not be worrying too much about a heavy shower of rain, other than yourself being soaked!

Thanks for adding options for me, if I can get my hands on one to play with before I buy then I will certainly consider. Probably the Pentax K5 II as I would prefer to buy from new. D7000 is an excellent camera (and I'm not biased as I use Canon!) yes those kit lenses will get mixed reviews but you'll find the same of most kit lenses but they'll be a good starting point and by the time you feel the need to replace them you'll have a better idea what you want to replace them with.

Well I travel an awful lot, so it's mostly scenery, landscapes, but I also enjoy shooting wildlife and sunsets. Pretty much anything that gives good colour and depth. I like to photograph a lot of cityscapes at dusk/night so I will be getting a tripod too. I also looked at polarizing filters, these are fairly cheap, and I shoot a lot on the beach too so I guess it will help filter out those sun spikes etcIn the current ranges, the products are all pretty reliable, very competent and good value for the technology you get. Whatever you buy needs to be something you'll carry around and want to hold and handle a lot.
I think I'm going to go with the Nikon D7000 as the sample images I looked at are of solid quality. Thanks for your input guys
Any accessories you think I should get? I narrowed down to, a backpack style bag, good tripod, 2 filters, one polarize and one general UV. And a 64gb Sandisk high speed SDHC card
Do you mean 18-55mm rather than 28-55mm?
I have the 18-55, it feels a bit cheap in the construction but the optics are great and the VR helps a lot if you plan on shooting any video (or stills in low light).
The 55-300mm VR is supposed to be very good optically but is quite slow to focus so is not recommended for sports. I was going to buy it but am holding off for the 70-300mm VR which has much snappier autofocus.
One lens I would recommend getting if you go the Nikon route is the 35mm f1.8, for only about £140 it is a great piece of glass and will take great shots indoors without flash.

Indeed - it looks fabulous on paper. The quoted US price is $1200 - if that comes in at about the £800-900 bracket (although £ is currently dropping, isn't it) that's stunningly good value too.Edited to add: Bother - just seen this is £1099 MSRP (what a typical rip off!) so street prices in three figures???
Plus the WR-1 looks interesting too.
